Dutta offers Xoom root insctructions, software

Koushik Dutta, who was the first hacker to put the ROM Manager tool onto the Motorola Xoom tablet, has now more completely rooted the device. He has put up detailed instructions on how to perform the root on his website for others to follow. The result is Superuser permissions on the device after a working recovery is used to obtain root.

The recovery isn't yet really useful, Dutta warned, as the SD card slot isn't yet enabled by the software. As such, the recovery will not be released until Google or Dutta get the SD card slot operational. ROM Manager support will also be released at the same time, though Dutta is offering the Premium copy for sale in advance.

To root the tablet, users need adb and fastboot installed on their host PCs. They also then need to download the XOOM root ZIP. The hack comes just one day after the release of the Android 3.0 tablet and was helped by an unlocked bootloader that allowed easier modification of the code.
