Purported iPhone 5 part shows edge-to-edge, four-inch screen

Four-inch iPhone 5 part possibly spotted

Rumors of an iPhone 5 with a four-inch display gained support late this week with a sighting of what might be its first identifiable part. A touchscreen digitizer layer shows the outline of an iPhone but with a noticeably larger, edge-to-edge screen. iDealsChina's snapshot from an unidentified Chinese firm suggests it would otherwise be superficially identical to the iPhone 4, although it's presumed Apple will make changes to improve the antenna performance.

More photos might be available soon, the company said, including the back.

If it reaches the market, the screen is unofficially expected to keep the 960x640 resolution of the iPhone 4 for the sake of app compatibility but would be easier to read at a distance and potentially better for watching videos. Most doubts around a larger screen persist around the changes in interface size, since buttons and navigation bars would remain the same.

A move to four inches would most likely be to help counter perceptions that Apple is lagging behind Android manufacturers in screens. The iPhone 4's display is higher resolution than on the Samsung Galaxy S and most other four-inch or larger screens, but it now represents one of the smallest displays for a high-end smartphone. Apple may also be losing its resolution edge as phones like the Motorola Atrix 4G are now using 540x960 resolutions.

    Apple

Quality vs. quantity. All those other vendors are having to seek an edge on quantity to compete with Apple on quality.

I'd like to know what idiots are giving

a perceived edge to Android smartphones. I doubt if it's the average consumer that's saying iPhone tech is falling behind the rest of the smartphone industry. It's like they expect Apple to copy what Android smartphones have. Unless they've taken some sort of consumer survey that says they prefer larger smartphones, I'd have to call BS. There's no way that Apple can or should try to duplicate features of every Android smartphone that's being sold. I naturally believe it's wise for Apple to continue building a smartphone with the same dimensions as it has in the past. Although I see no problem with a 3.5" display, but possibly there are people that have sight problems that could use a larger display.

4-Inches is indeed the sweet spot. I held a Samsung Galaxy phone next to an iPhone 4 and the 3.5 inch screen just felt a bit too small for comfortable viewing and web surfing. The Galaxy case was barely larger than the iPhone so it was still comfortable to hold.

It is tough to compare the two because the screen aspect ratios are different. Apple uses the antiquated 3:2 and most Android screens use the modern 15:9 screen.

    OMG

@wrenchy - did you take your medication today? This is the most sensible comment I have ever seen you make on this site. But I am still going to vote it down as is customary.

    3:2 versus 15:9

Is that a huge difference? I think you'd have to be in the film/video business to notice.

I like the look of the iPhone 4 screen...

but I think this a larger screen would be good but only if it can be done in the existing phone dimensions. Any larger and I think it starts to be cumbersome. I am after a phone that is comfortable to hold. Many of the Android handsets are just too big.

    Re: OMG

Yes, Wrenchy's drug use has spiralled out of control.

15:10 versus 15:9 is a big deal. I sold all of my Apple stock when I heard this.

Also, I sold all of my animal figurines and my wife's unmentionables. It just seemed pertinent.

Then I chanted. Hopefully. For a return by Apple to OS9.

    It didn't work.

    Why?
