HTC Thunderbolt cleared to ship to Verizon at last?

updated 08:20 am EST, Mon February 28, 2011

HTC Thunderbolt said getting Verizon greenlight

The long delays behind the HTC Thunderbolt may have come to an end based on a pair of slips both public and otherwise. An off-hand comment (since deleted) by well-known Verizon-affiliated tipster black_man_x indicated that the "Thunderbolts are go," a sign that the phone was cleared to ship. While not definite by itself, a secondary tip corroborated it and suggest the Thunderbolt could shipping to Verizon stores this week with sales starting within "days," according to GizmoFusion.

The 4G-packing flagship is thought to have been slated for as early as February 14 but to have been pushed back multiple times to fix firmware problems with short battery life. More recent tips may have narrowed the in-store date to March 10.

As a phone, the Thunderbolt is mostly an upgraded Desire HD with the needed LTE modem to pull down the 5-12Mbps typical, 50Mbps peak speeds on Verizon's new 4G network. Its 4.3-inch screen is there to help allow for a large capacity battery and also helps with the front video camera, which on Verizon will support Skype video chat along with some other third-party apps. An eight-megapixel back camera has transitioned from the GSM original.
