iPad 2 parts allude to white and black colors

Apple's event this Wednesday might bring a new color of iPad model if a part leak reflects its plants. Photos of the digitizer layer for the next iPad have surfaced from Shenzhen that show a version with a white bezel. The 9to5 finding also showed a black version and implied that Apple might have a way to color the back as well.

The same digitizers also reinforced some of what's already known about the hardware features, including the front camera evidenced by the smaller hole and what might be a smaller overall footprint through what appears to be a slightly thinner bezel. Most tips have pointed to a thinner, more iPod touch-like design that would also bring a rear camera, a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor and 3G versions for both GSM carriers such as AT&T and CDMA carriers like Verizon.

Pricing isn't expected to change and may be Apple's biggest advantage over devices like the Motorola Xoom, although it's unclear whether capacities will go up. Any confirmation should come during the March 2 presentation and may not have have much of a wait time, as Apple is rumored to be shipping almost immediately after the unveiling.

    Say it isn't so

Let's hope Apple isn't moving toward polycarbonate in the iPad2.

    RE: polycarbonate

It might seem like a perceived quality "loss" to switch to polycarbonate from the unibody aluminum. But Apple is certainly capable of making a good polycarbonate design (see current white MacBooks) and the switch would help with one of the iPads main criticisms (weight).

    Polycarbonate history.

As I type this post on a thermally discoloured and hair-line crack ridden polycarbonate MacBook, I have to agree with TomSawyer that, though unlikely, a move back to plastic would be a thoroughly retrograde step. Also, this same MacBook weighs 4.5 Lbs so I don't think that a move away from aluminium would necessarily make new iPads lighter. Personally, I don't get the attraction of white as a colour. I would have preferred the black MacBook but wasn't willing to pay the "Black Tax" of an extra $200. So what is it about white... answers on the back of a $20 bill please!

    black

The black MacBook's palmrest 'does not crack as easily' was the story, but in reality, they did and do crack just the same way as the white ones—the cracks just don't show up as easily, because the seam is black in the first place.

    metal: thinner.
    plastic: thicker.

At the end, not much saving in weight and you end up with a heat trap.

    Polycarbonate unlikely

Why all the speculation over polycarbonate this morning when no one has ever suggested it before, and no evidence indicates Apple is even thinking of doing this?

Apple does have two or three very interesting patents on carbon fibre backs for the iPad however, which would be an excellent choice and easily colourable. I'm thinking that the first poster probably just mis-spoke.

As to the article's question about more storage versus price. If they have a choice of giving more storage or lowering the price, this time it would clearly be more advantageous to lower the price. The storage sizes they have now are more than enough for the majority of the market and a lower price would act on their main point of leverage with their competitors.

    plants?

I see lights reflected in the picture, but no plants. Or is like "manufacturing plants" not the leafy kind? :)
