Motorola Xoom’s back in contention with Wi-Fi only pricing

Undercuts Wi-Fi only iPad equivalent

The Motorola Xoom has had its UK pricing announced by retailer PC World, which has listed the device for the US equivalent pricing of $730 on pre-order. This is around $100 less than the equivalent pricing for the 32GB Wi-Fi-only iPad in the UK. It also puts it on par with the Wi-Fi-only entry-level iPad 16GB while offering an additional 16GB of memory for a similar price. And, at least until this Wednesday, it also offers superior processing and graphics performance over the iPad.

The $800 pricing of the Wi-Fi plus 3G Xoom in the US has caused considerable controversy. While it took CES by storm in January winning the award for best in show, users were aghast at its launch pricing that put it well above the entry-level iPad in the US. The release of the Wi-Fi only model, with sharper pricing, was seen as critical to device gaining traction in the tablet segment currently dominated by Apple.

The announcement of the UK pricing will hearten Android fans looking to see Apple given a run for its money. At this stage, the Wi-Fi-only Xoom is expected to go on sale in the US for $600, on par with Apple’s Wi-Fi only 32GB iPad in the states.

    Models and Pricing

The next forty-eight hours, as Apple announces its upgraded iPad, will set the tone for the market over the next six months. Comparing the Xoom with a soon-to-be-discontinued iPad is a worthless comparison. Motorola may have shown its hand a bit too soon giving Apple the opportunity to respond although, in truth, Apple tend not to "actively" complete. Time will tell. Patience will out.

    holy cow...

this is surprising, in a good way.
Looks I'll decide tomorrow about iPad or Xoom not based on the price, but based on the features :D

    They need to check fact!

If you look at http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad it shows the 32gig wi-fi only at 510 pounds, just 10 pounds or $16 difference. They are trying to compare US pricing for the iPad with the UK priced Xoom

    More Biased Writing In

favor of the ipad. The addition of two cameras and dual core processor means apple will likely raise the price to keep from reducing profit margins on ipad2. Profit margins rule at apple, I would be shocked if there is no rise in price when these features are added.

Nope. First off, Apple makes the processor. This allows them to pay cost for it, which keeps prices far lower. Second, you have to remember their margins on the iPad were 30% or more when they started selling it. That was a year ago. Component parts, production costs, etc, have all declined since then, so their margins are nothing if not much higher now. Thus, they can add to the cost of the product and leave the price alone, as it will just bring their margins back to 30% or so.

iOS ecosystem is the deciding factor

For those of us who have spent significant money in the app store, an android tablet would have to revolutionary for most to think of switching.

Honeycomb has how many native apps? I think it is less than 50 right now.

I'm glad there is competition tho. Look how far the iPhone has come in 3 years.

the iPad and it's android equivolents will replace most laptops in the not too distant future.

All we need is a decent light case with a good keyboard.

    what you really mean...

You meant to say it offers superior processor and graphics *hardware* over the current iPad, not necessarily better performance. Android is not nearly as optimized as iOS, so it needs the super-beefy hardware to perform decently. Let's just see what happens when the iPad2 ships...
