BlackBerry PlayBook battery manager hints 17 hours

A PlayBook Battery Assistant app found for the BlackBerry PlayBook ahead of its launch has hinted that it will have very long battery life. Comparing the battery life at 50 percent and at 20 percent, BerryReview heard the tablet would get roughly 17 hours of battery life in web browsing and a still healthy eight hours for video playback. Full 3D gaming could still last for six hours.

The numbers are likely to vary somewhat depending on the usage and may not necessarily reflect the final numbers. RIM may have supported the claims itself since it has loaded the PlayBook with an unusually high-capacity battery and has estimated that it could match or beat the iPad despite the smaller size.

RIM still hasn't committed to a ship date for the PlayBook six months after its debut and is rumored to be rushing an April launch that would need a patch even as it arrives in stores, although this hasn't been corroborated by other sources. Battery life may have been one of the points needing improvement and is one of the frequent optimization tweaks necessary in the late stages of a product launch.

we'll see how good it is

Do sports car owners complain about fuel mileage?

Judging by the screen shot (fuzzy type notwithstanding), the lack of typographic finesse alone would drive me nuts.

    Really?

    "Hint", "may", "heard", "could"....

Wake me when it's available and we'll see.

And It Really Doesn't Help ...

... that they spelled "ASSISTANT" as "ASSISTENT". My eyes! But perhaps the latter reflects the "big tent" they're trying to create. Or maybe it's just part of that "rushing an April launch" thing.

It's very unlikely they could get that much

battery life based on the components used. RIM is basically using components that all the industry is using. So unless they've got some breakthrough in battery tech or practically doubled the size of the battery, it just wouldn't be possible to boost battery life to that degree. A 15% to 20% greater battery life I could see, but on the order of 70% over the iPad would be nigh impossible. I think they must have meant seven hours, not seventeen. However, if they've managed some breaththrough, I'd have to give them props for pulling that feat off.

story is mainly about battery life

first we heard its terrible, now its great.

personally if its this great...I have to wonder if they didn't make the tablet a little heavy.

I don't need it to be quite this good. Still if its under 1lb, and has this battery life, then they've done well.
