iOS 5, upgraded MobileMe go missing from iPad 2 event

Event proves relatively bare-bones

Several major predictions failed to come true during today's iPad 2 event. Perhaps the most significant of these was an upgraded MobileMe; the service was expected to become free, and gain some sort of media locker allowing remote access of iTunes content. Strong evidence came from Apple itself, as the company discontinued boxed copies of MobileMe and indeed removed any way of paying. Apple has even admitted that its North Carolina data center is being constructed for iTunes and MobileMe content.

The company did not even offer a preview of iOS 5, instead choosing to concentrate on iOS 4.3. Some showing of v5.0 was considered virtually guaranteed, as Apple has traditionally previewed major iOS revisions in March. If iOS 5 ships in time for an iPhone 5 in June or July, the company will have to schedule a separate event to give developers enough time to prepare apps.

MobileMe improvements may be delayed by one or more factors. The beginning of the data center's operations has been postpoined until "spring," which could mean March but also a date as far away as May. The service itself may have incomplete features, or unresolved licensing agreements. Apple is believed to have solved objections from music labels.

    Yep

Developer SDK events take well over an hour to do, and I doubt they want to spoil the release of the iPad. Same thing happened last year.

I'd say we'll have an event late March/early April.

Umm yea, its not "missing". Just because someones fake prediction that was pulled out of thin air didn't come true doesn't give you the right to say somethings missing. It's not missing, an idiots prediction just didn't come true.

No one said you couldn't pay. It's just you have to pay through Apple, which ups the cost for most of us 'smart shoppers'.

    Oh

The beginning of the data center's operations has been postpoined until "spring," which could mean March but also a date as far away as May.

No, it could mean as far away as mid June. But even apple saying 'it should startup in spring' is immaterial, because we aren't talking about anything that Apple has announced. Not one person is going to care if the center isn't open until August (well, idiots here will be, but ignore them). If Apple had announced "Free .Mac services including silly music lockers will be online in the spring!", then spring would mean more than just opening a data center.

The service itself may have incomplete features, or unresolved licensing agreements. Apple is believed to have solved objections from music labels.

Or maybe they aren't ready yet.

And bear in mind it isn't like they flip a switch, the data center comes alive, and then Apple announces 80 new great cloud capabilities the next day.

    Although

It would be hillarious if Apple starts up the NC data center and then announces nothing. That the whole purpose of the data center was to move their upload/cloud resources to a secondary location to provide better services and speed for all the existing purposes (not to mention having a disaster plan, and to get out from paying a ton to akamai for hosting a ton of their content).
