CEA begins process to standardize 3D glasses

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) this week began the process of creating a standard for 3D glasses. The association is now looking for proposals to standardize 3D active eyewear that uses an infrared synchronized interface. A standard will allow for interoperable 3D glasses among the different 3DTVs out there.

Companies that wish to submit a proposal are encouraged to join the 3D Technologies Working Group. They need to download the formal Active Eyewear Standards IR Sync Request for Proposal (RFP), and send it in by March 31. The working group will then choose the proposals that will become the basis for standardization.

The CEA believes standardizing 3D glasses will speed up the process of 3DTV adoption. Thus far, the adoption rate is rather disappointing for the industry, as a Nielsen study found that 59 percent of North American buyers were deliberately skipping 3D TVs.
