Popular developer claims Android more profitable than iOS

Dev notes double activity on Android platform

Despite the broader reach of Apple's App Store compared to the Android Market, some developers have reported more success selling apps on Google's mobile platform. Spacetime Studios, a developer that offers popular apps through both avenues, claims that it consistently observed much higher user activity on Android.

The company's Pocket Legends app, a MMO game, is said to be downloaded approximately 9,000 times each day on the Android Market, while the iOS counterpart only averages 3,000 to 4,000 daily downloads, according to a Computerworld report.

As expected, the download numbers equate to a significant difference in revenue from each platform. Android users typically generate 30 to 50 percent more revenue than iOS users, including profits from app purchases and advertising. Android users are said to use the app for more time than the iOS version by a factor of three, while also being three times as likely to click on ads.

"Android has become our primary interest," said Spacetime chief executive Gary Gattis.

The executive theorizes that the gap is likely due to the smaller number of competing apps on the Android platform, a number which is eclipsed by the variety available on iOS. He also credits Google for working to "nurture the gaming community," while the search giant's open approach is also said to be a contributing factor.

    Looks like c***

Of course, that company will get more from Android because there is less competition on Android for dollars and eyeballs.

If that screenshot is anything to go by, I would have to be paid to use their apps.

I am sure it is true

Android and Android phones are relatively new, so the users are the more technically inclined and typical early adopters. They have a different profile than the typical iPhone users, and some applications will appeal to them more than the iOS users.
Of course, some developers will find the Android store more profitable than the App Store. And others will find the opposite. It should not be a surprise.

Why don't we stop buying his c*** on iOS devices and let him concentrate on his Android c***?

    nothing wrong with this

@hash: and why exactly should we do that? This developer is simply sharing his experiences as they are, what's wrong with that?

    Making Money

The article also doesn't state that the App is free...and make all their money through in-app purchases.

    Means nothing!

You do realize that this is a free game right? They pbl make money from ingame advertising since you still don't have ingame purchases on Android. If advertisements is what they are doing then no wonder they are making more money from the Android store. The iOS and Android market places do not have the same monetisation strategies at all and just because ad-supported apps don't do particularly well on iOS doesn't mean anything. Oh and the graphics of that screen shot look ... well pitiful for a lack of a better word.

    So what?

I'm not sure what the big deal is ... if he's making money on Android, great! I'd hate to live in a world with only one (mobile) OS.

He frankly admitted that what's likely driving the activity on Android is the LACK of any serious competition in his game niche at this point. That may well change over time, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's singing a different tune a year from now.

I have to agree with aristotles that the visual look of the game based on this sole screenshot indicates to me that it wouldn't do well on iOS (and indeed it hasn't), which could be a factor the dev isn't plugging in to his calculations -- or I could be jumping to conclusions based on too little evidence. :)

Anyway, point is that if he's happy over there, great. We neither need nor want every developer on earth on the iOS platform. Domination is not necessary to Apple's survival or their customers' happiness.

    graphics awfull indeed

Yeah, those graphics are horrible indeed. I wonder if that's because the developer hasn't layed much emphasis on that or just has no taste, or wether it is because he is working from a single codebase (which I would assume?) that then ports to different mobile platforms and this would then be the best you can get.

If the latter would be true, then Apple's initial strong reluctance towards codeporting towards iOS (which they later loosened up on a bit) would actually seem quite understandable imho.

Anyone has some more insight on this? Or are there games on both iOS and Android with the same stunning graphics perhaps?

    Yeah, sure...

I bet that graphic is just a cover up. They make more money out of x-x-x stuffs that they really do.
