Foursquare out v 3.0 app, testing NFC check

Check-in service Foursquare for mobile platforms is testing enabling users to check in to locations by simply running their NFC-equipped handsets to badges, though this is still in the testing phase. This was revealed by a tour of Foursquare headquarters as the team readied a new Foursquare Merchant Platform for the now-launched Foursquare 3.0 that lets stores offer sales for Foursquare members. The sales are categorized as Flash Specials, Friend Specials, Swarm Specials, Newbie Specials and more.

NFC, or Near-Field Communications, is becoming more popular in portable devices such as smartphones for mobile payment, and is integrated into Android 2.3. Rumors of the iPhone 5 also having NFC software and hardware built-in are circulating as well. [via NFCWorld]
