iPad 2's launch weekend sales could crack 600,000

updated 10:25 am EST, Fri March 11, 2011

Analysts expect over 500,000 in two days

Over 600,000 iPad 2s may be sold by the end of launch weekend, analysts suggest. Brian Marshall of Gleacher & Co. is calling for at least 500,000 in initial sales. Creative Strategies' Tim Bajarin is arguing for 500,000 in a span of two days, which could provide headroom for Apple to crack the 600,000 mark by Monday.

Analysts at Piper Jaffray and Rodman & Renshaw likewise agree that the iPad 2 will probably outsell the iPad 1. Apple sold 300,000 units of the latter in the product's first 24 hours; Bajarin notes that within three months revenue broke $2 billion. By contrast, the iPhone took more than a year and a half to surpass the $2 billion mark.

The iPad 2 could well be on track to meet forecasts if online sales are an indication. Apple's web storefront is already listing shipping times between two and three weeks, despite the fact that sales started around 1AM Pacific time with shipping estimates of 3 to 5 business days. Retail launches are only slated to begin at 5PM in each US timezone.

Online shipping estimates have been slipping. Mine is estimated to ship in 5-7 days, not 3-5. I wonder if this is Apple fearing/anticipating huge orders and being conservative or if there are genuine production and/or distribution problems. I guess I'll find out in 5-7 days.

    Probably conservative

I remember when I ordered my iPhone 4 on the first day of pre-orders, Apple said it wouldn't ship until a week after release. I received it one day BEFORE release. :-)

It's always better to under-promise and over-deliver than the other way around.

What! The iPad 2 is already suffering cracks! 600,000 devices with cracking issues!

Looks like there'll be a class action lawsuit real soon!
