iPad 2 launch lines mark return to form

With less than two hours to go, lineups for the iPad 2 have shown a return to form after the near-absent Verizon iPhone queues. The lineup at the 5th Avenue store, usually the longest in the US, is believed to have grown to over 1,000 people. Nearby, the SoHo store's line wrapped around the corner and extended to at least Houston Street.

As expected, Apple's popup SXSW store in Austin is real and has its own line. Other queues are ranging into the dozens or hundreds, some of which may have been longer than for the original iPad.

Few instances have been mentioned of queues at carrier or third-party stores, though limited supply may still make Apple's official shops the most popular choices.

The much more substantial queues than for the Verizon iPhone have been helped mostly by the launch of a genuinely new product but also by deliberate steps to guarantee large lines. Apple declined to allow pre-orders and thus guaranteed large queues from early adopters. It also timed the launch for 5PM on a Friday and made it much easier for workers to get time off. Launching a month later has also meant warmer weather.

No lineups have been reported for non-Apple tablets, including the Galaxy Tab and Xoom.

    of course not

No lineups have been reported for non-Apple tablets, including the Galaxy Tab and Xoom.

Standing in line is epidemic among the apple elite. You have to wonder if some are uber-fanboys standing in line because they know if there isn't anyone standing in line, some analyst idiot will say the iPad2 is a complete bust because there were no lines.

Very few products have people standing in line because most people know better. Usually standing in line is limited to people waiting to buy a video game or game system, or because some stupid toy came in the night before and you need to get it for the little brat for xmas otherwise he'll cry and you'll feel like you're a bad parent.

And to think of all those people, like myself, having to work on this day instead of just lounging around waiting for some gizmo to be sold.

Testudo, seriously dude, why do you spend so much of your time haunting Apple forums?

I hope there are better ways for you to spend your time.

This is not an Apple forum...

I also don't think there is a better way for an uber-troll to spend his/her time. Nice to know he has a job though.

    Shell Game

The frequency with which Testudo comes out of his shell to rain opprobrium on just about everything leads me to wonder about one thing.

According to "The Truth About Cats and Dogs", the best way to get a turtle to poke their head out is to push a finger up their @ss. So the question is... who's doing this to Testudo, and why?

    testudo = wrong

the lines are there just so "some analyst idiot will say iPad2 is a complete bust because there were no lines"? Haha, that's so stupid it is funny.

are you referring to all those analysts who said it wouldn't sell the last time? Or did you mean Ballmer saying Apple would never get a foothold in the tablet market? Because, those non-fan boiz were so right the last time....

Motorola stock has been quickly dropping, helped

by Xoom sales, or non-sales, so to speak. Anyone who gets stuck with purchasing a Xoom may end up owning a product of a bankrupt company considering how poorly Motorola Mobility has been doing since being formed a month or so ago.. That company is literally sucking the life out of shareholders funds and employees with their downright, utter incompetence.

    Oh please.

I don't blame these ppl for standing in line--its their day and they can spend it however they want. It's easy to sit and criticize ppl for doing the same thing they've been doing for years waiting for concert tickets. Personally, I would rather go do something more productive and have FedEx or UPS bring it to me unless Apple pays me to stand in line, or gives me a free iPad to do so. I always thought the lines were more of a publicity gimmick to make their stock go up but what do I know.

    Best Buy

We went to Best Buy in Paducah, KY. They got exactly 20 iPad 2s and we were 10th in line and there were about 40 behind us.

So at least 30 were disappointed.
