Djay for iPhone and updated Djay for iPad arrive
Algoriddim expanded the footprint of its mobile DJ apps on Tuesday with its first phone-sized music creator. Djay for iPhone ($10, App Store) brings all the features of Djay for iPad but in a smaller version. It uses the usual two virtual turntables in landscape but switches to a single visible deck when held vertical for those who can work with one turntable at a time.
It still preserves the analog-like control over the turntables along with cue points, BPM matching, pre-cueing on a headphone splitter and AirPlay audio for automixes. Auto looping and bounce looping are new and will either sync up a slice of a song with the beat or remix the beat by holding down a button. The auto loop mode lets DJs set the loop duration on the spot.
Owners of the iPad app ($20, App Store) get their own upgrade, including some unique features through the extra screen size. The 1.1 update adds auto and bounce looping but also a manual loop to precisely set the loop, quantize it to the beat, and instantly trigger a reloop. Cue points have now expanded to four; the addition improves the complexity of mixes as well as introduces very basic sampling.
DJs with more eclectic music collections now get a much requested feature to see the Djay-determined BPM for a given track in the iTunes library rather than having to queue it on a deck, making it easier for a DJ to produce a consistent set in a particular style, like drum-and-bass or trance. External audio support is now much easier with the option of Bluetooth audio for wireless headphones or an outside speaker like a Jambox.
Both apps are available today. The iPhone version require at least iOS 4.2 as well as an iPhone 3GS, a third-generation iPod touch or later.
