Apple puts iPad 2 world debut at 5PM March 25
Apple on Tuesday detailed the international rollout for the iPad 2. The tablet will mirror its US arrival and launch in 25 countries both at Apple retail stores and certain resellers, such as Best Buy Canada, at 5PM local time on March 25. Online orders will also start at 1AM in the respective territories.
In spite of US shortages, the Friday launch is reaching all the promised countries with the exception of Japan, where efforts have shifted to helping recover from the earthquake.
The scheduling has also now extended to Asian countries and territories. Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea will all get the iPad 2 in April. The move is relatively early for these countries, which have often been pushed back for months. It may be in part to help head off rabid gray market importing that has seen a significant portion of US sales go to informal resellers, some of whom are from China.
An April deployment supports beliefs that Apple expects to ramp production quickly and have enough to cater to a world launch without worsening its supply situation.
