Mozilla makes Firefox 4 release official

updated 11:40 am EDT, Tue March 22, 2011

Windows, Mac, Linux versions available

While having let the software slip out the door on Monday, Mozilla has today made the release of Firefox 4 official. Windows, Mac and Linux versions are available, and in numerous different languages, ranging from mainstays like English, French and Chinese to less commonly-supported languages like Icelandic and Catalan. Only a handful of languages are still limited to v3.6.15, namely Assamese, Georgian, Occitan and Serbian.

Version 4 represents a major overhaul of Firefox designed to keep it on par or ahead of browsers like Chrome or Safari. By default it now places tabs on top, and introduces other interface elements such as "app tabs," tab groups and the ability to browse and install add-ons in a more closely-integrated system. Like Chrome, Firefox 4 makes it possible to sync bookmarks and other settings with multiple copies of the browser.

Performance is another major emphasis of the upgrade. Start and rendering times are claimed to be dramatically faster than in Firefox 3.6, thanks both to a new JavaScript engine and support for hardware acceleration in the form of OpenGL on Macs and Direct 2D and 3D in Windows. If Flash, QuickTime or Silverlight crashes in a tab, Mozilla claims that Firefox itself will continue to run.

Just great. Yet another browser that takes me to a google page of search results when I key in a name such as apple. Just take me to apple.com already!

    so....

You want the browser to make the decision that it should know what you mean when you just type in 'apple'?

First off, should it take you to Apple.com, apple.org, apple.net, apple.ca, apple, jp?

Second, why are you so lazy that you can't type .com?

Third, what it should do is send you to a "Sorry, can't find the web site at http://apple". Because you said to go to apple.

So, basically, you're too lazy to type for other characters, too lazy to hit cmd-return (which again only works for .com anyway, so its half-useless) and you want your browser to do every little thing for you. Are you also upset it doesn't stroke you while you look at p***?

    testudo is right on this...

To type in a single keyword, and then expect it to guess the URL is entirely wrong behavior for many technical reasons (some of which testudo mentioned). It could even cause problems, if you happened to land on a malware site.

Google Chrome does a nifty web search for you in the addressbar, but never will it just drop you onto a site.

    ugh

For all you "tabs at the top" lovers, Firefox has it now, with no apparent way to change it back. I don't like it, and it doesn't save any space. In fact, it takes up slightly more space than the top part of Safari (a few pixels more).

And Testudo, is there some reason you always have to be such a jerk?
