Nintendo 3DS estimated to cost $101 to make The upcoming Nintendo 3DS costs the electronics maker $101 to build in terms of ram materials, EuroGamer revealed after speaking to UBM TechInsights. While this is a preliminary estimate, it leaves a $149 gap to the system's $250 retail price. The cost is also $15 more than that of the DSi, which launched in 2009.
Nintendo hasn't revealed what retailers pay for the device, and Nintendo has overhead costs such as labor, marketing, packaging and distribution to worry about as well that's not included in the raw materials cost. At the same time, there is also the cost of research and development to cover.
The 3DS has that advanced, glasses-free 3D top touchscreen, sized at four inches. There is also an 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, along with a gyroscope.
In contrast, an iPhone 4's cost of parts has been set at $187.51.
