Samsung: 'we will not be outdone' by iPad 2 thinness

Samsung says Galaxy Tab 10.1 thinner to beat iPad

Samsung Mobile executive Omar Khan in a chat late Wednesday admitted that the updated Galaxy Tab 10.1 was made thinner solely to beat Apple. Although the technology to make it thinner was already in progress, the iPad 2's launch hastened bringing that technology to the market, Khan told AllThingsD. The new model is 8.6mm thick, just 0.2mm thinner than the iPad 2 but a full 2.3mm thinner than the model Samsung showed at Mobile World Congress just a month ago.

"We went back to the drawing board," Khan said. "We will not be outdone. It accelerated some of the commercialization of technology we already had in the works."

Questions remain about how the thinness was accomplished, such as possible effects on the battery life of the Tab 10.1. The booth at CTIA has made it difficult since the company is using the thicker models and only has a comparison display to show how thinner the tablet will eventually be.

Suspicions have been raised that Samsung had advance knowledge as design changes rarely happen so quickly, the company is shipping the thicker Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Vodafone UK as an "exclusive" in the 10.1V. The design swap may have cost Samsung valuable time as it now won't ship the 10.1 or the equally thin 8.9 until the summer, months after the iPad 2 as well as rival Android 3.0 tablets like the Motorola Xoom.

    Check the tense!

Oh, I get it now... "eventually will be"
For a moment there I thought they actually had something.

    Samsung is chasing...

the wind again. The new war now is thinness, not OS. Let see who gets to the 1.0mm finish line first wins..... nothing!

It just goes to show how much these companies

are copycatting Apple. Whatever Apple does, then the industry decides to go Apple one better. Although I wonder at what cost in manufacturing fees. Apple's economies of scale allow it to do nearly everything at highly reduced costs. How many tablets is Samsung going to sell? A few million at most. Apple intends to move 40 million tablets this year and it's very likely considering initial demand. Most likely the only thing that will hold back iPad 2 sales will be limited supplies. Eventually, Apple products are going to require very costly machining devices and Apple will have the edge to buy them and get their money back through sales. Most competitors will not be able to follow at all or follow and end up losing money.

I guess if any tablet vendor can compete with Apple in hardware, it will be Samsung. Their weakness will be having to depend on Honeycomb 3.0. Another major advantage Apple has is their global retail outlets that will push tablet sales more than another other outlets.

    Seoul, start your copiers

At least, they don't try to pretend that they are anything but a knockoff.

    Specs! Specs! Specs!

The Samsung executive's comments are a perfect example of why every other company has been chasing Apple since the first iPod came out and why none have ever passed Apple. All they do is look at a specs sheet and work to create a "me too" product that has specs that are trivially better than the Apple product.

They just don't seem to be able to understand that the overall user experience is what matters. Sure, a thinner tablet is nice, but the original iPad and the original Galaxy Tab were not exactly shaped like bricks. I don't think there will be anyone who will buy the Galaxy Tab simply because it is 0.2 mm thinner than the iPad.

    Samsung the new Microsoft

Looks like Samsung is happy to fill the vacant "me too" shoes of Microsoft. Even the name "Xoom" is too familiar to another failed Apple copy cat product the Zune. Samsung like LG and others are better suited to making hardware like TVs, Dvd-Blu Ray players etc... and not creating anything new and visionary. Samsung you are way over your head.

    The Easy Route

So Samsung has copied the easiest thing of the iPad2. Making it thin was easy. Capturing the soul that Apple puts in there - impossible.
