ATT confirms HSUPA due on Atrix, Inspire in April

An AT&T spokesman confirmed this weekend that the missing HSUPA 3G would be coming to more phones besides the iPhone 4 in April. Both the Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G will get the faster upload speeds through a firmware update. The yet-to-launch Infuse 4G will also have HSUPA from the start, it said.

Other phones are likely to get the added speeds turned on from the start.

The company hasn't said why the speeds were turned down and skirted the issue when challenged in a Better Business Bureau claim. Its reasons are unofficially believed to revolve around a lack of HSUPA at some sites and a desire to test all of its devices for the complete spec before letting them use full speeds. Some devices, including the iPhone 4 and data modems, were given the exceptions to meet their more obvious performance needs.

Without HSUPA, the Atrix 4G and other devices can still get their full 14.4Mbps or faster download speeds but were severely limited for tasks that needed quick uploads, like two-way video chat or multi-photo uploads.
