Microsoft says Atlanta store coming
Microsoft started off the week with plans for its first East coast retail store. Its ninth shop will open at Atlanta's Lenox Square Mall, sometime in the spring and most likely in April. In keeping with Microsoft's practices, Apple also has a store in the same location and is likely the primary incentive for the new shop.
With the exception of its Mall of America store in Minneapolis, almost all of Microsoft's stores so far have been on or near the West coast of the US, focusing primarily on Apple's core user base in California. Houston, New York City, and Orlando have been rumored getting stores this year, but none have been definitively identified so far.
It just opened its latest California store in Costa Mesa on Thursday.
The shops have regularly been low traffic but, to Microsoft, haven't been intended primarily as revenue generators. It has publicly described them as experiments to see what works and to pass along knowledge to other retailers. Most of its strategy has involved mimicking Apple stores, ranging from the basic layout through to an in-person help desk and fully functional demo units. [via WinRumors]
