Google +1 official, boosts search results from friends

updated 02:40 pm EDT, Wed March 30, 2011

Google Plus 1 goes live

Google on Wednesday launched its long-rumored Google +1 feature. The addition is similar to Digg or Reddit and lets those with Google accounts recommend results by clicking the namesake +1 button. The move will help boost searches that people find genuinely useful and gets added relevance from friends.

The new addition might also soon give +1 recommendations from outside sites, such as a linked Twitter account, Google said.

Rollouts start today for English users on the main Google.com page and need a Google profile to work. More users will see it over time, but users can visit the Google Experimental page to volunteer and see it early.

The launch comes minus many of the rumored features that would have come about, including an iOS app, video chat, and the rumored social networking. Google had been rumored developing a service that would at least partly compare to Facebook, but public denials and now the finished +1 service suggest it didn't have any near-term intentions to compete. It gets closest by mirroring elements of Facebook's Like button, but it's currently limited to Google's own search page.
