Sony CEO accidentally backs iPhone 5 camera plans

Sony chief Sir Howard Stringer may have unintentionally given away plans for an eight-megapixel camera in the iPhone 5. During an interview with the WSJ's Walt Mossberg, he claimed that the company's camera sensor plant in Sendai had seen hit by the Japanese earthquake and that shipments of sensors to Apple would be delayed. Apple has so far only sourced cameras from OmniVision, suggesting that Sony was shipping for a future model.

The same February rumor attaching an eight-megapixel sensor to the iPhone 5 had Sony taking over from OmniVision after possible chip yield issues prevented the sensor from arriving on time. Sony's current eight-megapixel sensor from phones like the Xperia Neo may be an ideal fit as it has a CMOS sensor suited to low light with little noise. Apple has often insisted on overall quality over megapixel count and would get its needs met while still seeing a sensor upgrade.

A delay may help talk of the iPhone 5 missing WWDC. Although most have blamed the delay on iOS 5, it may also help Sony get enough sensors to Apple to accommodate demand. [via 9to5]

    "Better pictures"

is kind of a meaningless phrase in and of itself. Too many other factors.

Side-by-side comparisons of the exact same shot taken with both cameras would start to yield a more believable analysis.

The camera in your 3G is a two-megapixel camera. The camera in the iPhone 4 is five-megapixel. On a computer screen, it is entirely possible that the lesser camera might look to have a better image -- at 72dpi.

But take an identical picture with each, submit them to a photo lab for 8x10 or larger printing and I guarantee you'll notice a big advantage in the iPhone 4 picture.

    Further to my previous post

Here's a comparison of VIDEO quality on each, which should also give you some idea on the camera quality in much more stark detail. I also have an iPhone 2G and can vouch for the quality seen here:

Your on crack or a liar, because I own both a 3G and a iPhone 4 and can tell you right now its no contest. And under most situations my iPhone 4 takes better pictures then my Canon SD1000 at 7.1 MP

Low light photos are the killer.

It's easy to take relatively good pix with a CMOS sensor in bright light. The hard thing is taking pictures in medium to dark lighting. Lots of noise shows up, especially in the shadows. It looks like old-school high ISO film, but with an uglier "grain" pattern. Remember film? I do. I still have about a dozen rolls of Kodak Tri-X.

Is that the Sony CEO in the little thumbnail photo? It's hilarious - looks like he's having a heart attack.
