Euro firms complain they can't get iPad 2 for board meetings

Europe says iPad 2 shortage hurting meetings

European businesses have faced an unusual problem in having to delay board meetings due to iPad 2 shortages. Diligent Boardbooks' Simon Small noted to the FT that "almost all" large companies in the continent want to use the Apple tablet for meeting notes, but the chronic shortages have left many of them without supply. The decision to cap sales at two iPads per person, to prevent gray market sales in the face of chronic shortages, is leaving many companies without the option to go paperless.

Small cited an example of 10 clients across Africa and Europe who needed a total of 200 iPad 2s in the next month.

The middleman is one example and wasn't wholly representative of trends. He still saw there being rabid demand from companies hoping to eliminate waste and weight. Although an iPad 2 costs at least $499, the sheer volume of paper from meetings has made a tablet a less expensive option in the long term, along with being more eco-friendly.

Enterprise use has been demonstrated as growing outside of meeting rooms. Apple noted that 80 of the Fortune 100 were either testing or actively using iPads in deployments. For many, the iPad is much more portable than a regular notebook, lasts longer on battery life and is better for live presentations.

Regardless of the use, Small added that he hadn't seen any companies, at least in Britain, trying to use Android or another platform for the same purpose. "In the UK, the only tablet businesses want to view their board papers on right now is the iPad 2," he said.

    Um, laptops

still work, as far as I know, for taking notes...

That is, of course, assuming that those senior management types that sit on boards of companies aren't too dumb to use them.

    Never happened

This never happened. When has there even been an instant where companies couldn't have their board meetings because of a product wasn't available yet?

"Ooo, I want to be eco-friendly, but damn if the iPad 2 isn't available yet! Guess we'll have to go back to pen and paper and slaughter more trees!"

    What rubbish.

    I don't understand...

There should be plenty of Xooms available for board meetings. Hohohohohahaha.chuckle.teehee.

The analysts continue to talk about the rise of Android tablets and how businesses and corporations will be going for cheap Honeycomb tablets. Right now there's only one Honeycomb tablet, but there's still the Galaxy Tab and maybe a few other Android tablets. These executives could easily get hold of those other tablets and continue their board meetings.

I don't understand why they can't use the Dell Duo. The Wintard fanbois say this is the finest Windows Frankentablet money can buy and about 20X more useful than an iPad. Surely, executives can discern between useless and useful. Dell must be selling Duos by the millions to all the rabid Wintard fanbois who are in love with them and its three-hour battery life.

    The focus is wrong

Seriously delaying board meetings because iPad 2 isn't available? They can't have board meetings because of an unreleased product? Is the focus the company, or looking good at a board meeting. Ridiculous.

    Similar story

European companies, including at least one Swiss multinational, are being forced to delay a move to paperless board meetings because of the shortage of Appleā€™s recently launched iPad 2 tablet device .

Company secretaries in Europe and elsewhere quickly embraced the original iPad and a specialised iPad app called Boardbooks from Diligent, a New Zealand-based software developer, as a money and time-saving alternative to sending out bulky packages of board papers to directors each month.
