Google Maps for Android version 5.3 now out

Google late Monday posted an updated Google Maps app (Market) for Android devices. Most significantly, it brings with it the Google Location History dashboard, check in at home, and add new categories for rating places. The Location History shows users how far they've traveled and how much time they spent at home, work, and everywhere else.

While the history is private, users do have the option of sharing where they currently are. The home check-in requires opting in and cannot be searched to pinpoint its location for an outsider. Owners can also edit who sees check-ins, as well as name and address information for some locations.

The Google Places with Hotpot feature now allows users to add custom aspects of a place to review, in addition to pre-made categories like food or ambiance.

The app is now available for free and requires Android 1.6 or newer.
