Samsung Galaxy S may get Android 2.3 in two weeks
A representative from 3 UK said Tuesday that the Samsung Galaxy S was close to getting an Android 2.3 upgrade. The British carrier expected it in the "next couple of weeks" but "cannot confirm a date." Samsung had previously hinted 2.3 was coming, but it has never given out a date of its own.
It's not clear how widespread the updates will go or whether they will reach the US in a timely fashion. Europeans were the first to get Android 2.2 on the Galaxy S, but Americans had to wait months later for unexplained extra testing.
The upgrade won't have as much immediate effect on the Galaxy S since it has neither the front camera nor the NFC that the closely related Nexus S. It should still add a multi-touch keyboard with much improved copy-and-paste text, built-in VoIP calling using SIP, and much smarter power management. Performance should improve for graphics and transitions.
