Acer Iconia Tab A500 to hit US on April 24

Acer on Friday priced and dated the launch of its first tablet in the US, the Iconia Tab A500. Its 10-inch, Android 3.0-based flagship should reach Best Buy as an exclusive on April 24. The price will deliberately undercut that of the iPad 2 and will start at $450 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model.

Insider, the A500 still has the dual-core Tegra 2 processor and 1GB of RAM as well as a rear five-megapixel camera, a front two-megapixel camera, a microSDHC slot, and HDMI output. Acer has done little customization of the tablet itself besides some custom widgets, DLNA media sharing using clear.fi, and loading its in-house LumiRead e-book app. Some third-party apps do come out of the box, including Let's Golf and Need For Speed: Shift for games and Zinio's magazine aggregator.

Both the AT&T and Verizon cellular-equipped versions haven't yet had their release dates pinned down.

Accessories are coming with the tablet itself and should include a $70 Bluetooth keyboard, a $80 charging dock with audio line-out support, a $40 multi-position case, and a $30 international power adapter kit.

The tablet is just the second Android 3.0 device to ship anywhere in the world and may be Apple's first significant challenge. Motorola ended up hurting its chances in the market by first limiting the Xoom to the $800 3G model and is still selling its 32GB Wi-Fi version at a much higher $600. Android tablet makers in their brief history have historically had a hard time being price-competitive with Apple and led Samsung to drop Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 pricing; the Iconia Tab A500 is the first in a similar size to the iPad not to have been initially planned with a higher price.

    I strongly doubt Acer is making anything near the profit Apple makes with each unit. It is up against a much sexier competitor, it has thousands less apps, a hard to remember name (iconia tab A500?) An unproven OS from which I have read is more for nerds than the herds. I'm not saying I don't want Apple to feel the competition but this model looks like an instant buyers regret out of the box.

    I agree with the fisrt post, are they making any money on these?

    While it may be possible to undercut Apple on price, it is no use if they are not making any money.

    It lacks the Apps, the iTunes integration, the 3rd party support, etc, etc.

    Margins are tight sure, but...

    I'm just glad to see someone, anyone, could actually even do it. Motorola and Samsung gave the impression that you couldn't do a quality Android tablet for less than $600. I've held the Iconia Tab, and while it's not super-polished, it's made of aluminum and not the plastic you'd expect from Acer.

    ...... It's also really really ugly. It looks like they took an old LCD monitor and threw the rest inside of it. Blech.

    Does anyone know vital real-world specs...

    ...like battery life? The site says its 0.5 inches thick, compared to the iPad 2 which is 0.34" thick. So it's nearly 47% thicker. Weight is 1.7 lb. compared to iPad 2's 1.33 lb. (28% heavier).

    The extra RAM (2X iPad) is definitely an upside. Certainly, the camera specs are far superior (but is the software for them anywhere near as capable?). Any equivalent to iMovie (anywhere close at all)? And really, is there a real need for anything other than HD video capability for a tablet platform or are these companies just playing a spec war like the digital camera market experienced several years ago?

    People considering this new tablet entry should keep in mind the relative paucity of decent, tablet-configured apps for the Android OS. In my mind, the iPad 2 may be comparatively lacking in some aspects of its hardware, but it is the awesome breadth of the apps installed on mine that keeps it constantly by my side.

    I think it's great that all these companies are trying so hard to compete with Apple. It should drive Apple to continue innovating and enhancing their iOS devices at a much quicker pace while controlling any urge they might have to increase pricing.

    GPS?

    It'd be nice to see real GPS going into wifi-only tablets and 'phones', the BoM for a GPS chip is what, $2? Even if the functionality can only be unlocked by buying a nav app with integrated maps (thus nullifying the argument that you need a data plan to render google maps)

    why "Iconia?"

    Why does this have the same name as the absolute POS product they just announced? (the one with the double screens that weighs almost 7 pounds and has a battery that lasts for 2.5 hours)

    All anyone going to a store is going to know is ... "Iconia" and they are going to associate it with the big disaster product not this lesser one.

    For that matter why would anyone buy a product from a company that would even *make* such a monstrosity as the other 2-screen Iconia?

    This is perfect. Not ugly, unless your just used to the silver look like apples.
    This is priced accordingly. Remember, you can add as much GB as you'd like with the HDHC slot.
    Inexpensive Bluetooth options. Comes with Android 3.0, and will be just fine.

    This will sell out, no doubt. How many will they make? Enough? Android fans will love this for the price.

    Remember, not ALL companies make 100% margin on a device like Apple. The iPad's build cost is a little over $250 bucks. So, I'm sure Acer, top 3 of the worlds Largest PC manufacturer's can get it build for less than $300. That still leaves over a 25% margin. Not bad for a computer. They make much less than that on laptops.
