Cheap iPad 2 Smart Cover clone falls apart

iPad 2 Smart Cover knockoff serves as warning

A discovery late Thursday of a cheap copy of the iPad 2's Smart Cover has served as a possible warning for those shopping for clones. The unnamed Chinese make was found to be much more cheaply made than the official design and virtually ineffective at its job. Although MIC Gadget's example could wake and sleep the iPad, the shoddy construction was such that the hinge completely detached from the cover and would likely have led to a broken iPad if the owner wasn't holding the iPad underneath.

Use of cheaper materials was also evident in the smell, since the material had a hard-to-bear stench.

While people often hunt down clone products to get a lower price, the difference between the imitation was only slight, at about 220 yuan renminbi ($33) versus $39 for the official Apple cover. The relative lack of difference suggests Apple is operating on a lower profit margin than it sometimes does elsewhere.

    $40 is a lot...

But $33 isn't much cheaper and if it fals apart, then it might as well have been $3.

    What a stupid article...

A discovery late Thursday of a cheap copy of the iPad 2's Smart Cover

Someone 'discovered' a copy of the smart cover on thursday? Where was it? Will the person receive the nobel prize for his 'discovery'?

has served as a possible warning for those shopping for clones.

Yes, don't buy this clone. Wait, we don't know which one, since it's unnamed. Because if one maker makes c***, they must all make c***! Yes, that's it!

that the hinge completely detached from the cover and would likely have led to a broken iPad if the owner wasn't holding the iPad underneath.

So the iPad will break if it falls out of your hand? Sounds like the iPad needs more than just a 'cover' to protect it. Get a case!

Use of cheaper materials was also evident in the smell, since the material had a hard-to-bear stench.

Sorry, but 'cheap' and 'stench' don't go hand-in-hand. You can buy really expensive stuff that smells worth than 'cheap' stuff.

The relative lack of difference suggests Apple is operating on a lower profit margin than it sometimes does elsewhere.

Yes, that must be it. It couldn't be that the Chinese manufacturer not only can't make a decent product, but couldn't do it cheaply. Or that the manufacturer or seller was basing their price as being lower than apples, not the lowest possible price.

    Quality vs Price

That's why you stick with reputable brands that have quality suppliers. You just can't pay for a cheap product and hope it's works flawlessly. You get what you pay for. I did like the Apple Smart cover, but I wanted something with more all inclusive protection. After some internet surfing & sifting, I sorted out a few brands that I would bet my iPad2 on. While Otterbox looked rugged, it wasn't leather and it didnt have the magnetic feature. The Belkin looked clean and sleek, but didn't have complete enclosed protection. I settled for Mivizu. Their Euro Nouveau (Mivizu Sense) design laced with Italian leather, and magnetic function, just called my name on it. I check their price at $39.95, http://www.mivizu.com/ against Apple's $69.99 and I just couldn't hold myself from ordering the soft green folio. Mivizu even has a $10.00 discount coupon code, BAFIPAD2 that even throws in free shipping. Check them out. I will return tomorrow to post my feedback (I get the case today). Maria
