Final Cut Pro 2011 should have iPad, Thunderbolt

Bunim/Murray Productions' post-production lead Mark Raudonis gave some clues in a new revision of Final Cut Studio. Having been to a recent preview presentation at Apple's Cupertino headquarters, he hinted that at least the Final Cut Pro part of the suite embodied the Wayne Gretzky philosophy of skating to where the puck will be and has forward-thinking hardware features. It would be designed with Thunderbolt ports in mind and even had a degree of iPad support, Raudonis said in a clip shared by Filmmaker.

The app would have a file-based workflow, Raudonis added. Apple was also reportedly very aware of how competition had changed in recent years and was keeping track of the "moving target" that was Adobe Premiere and the Avid suite. What he saw was "awesome" and "very impressive."

What's implied by the new hardware support isn't clear, though certain parts may be self-evident. Thunderbolt's high-speed interface makes it very suited to directly editing from an external drive. Most of the hardware shown so far has included RAID striped external arrays that perform faster than most any single drive. The iPad's role is less definitive, but it could be used either as a previewer or to supplement the control set when linked to a nearby production Mac.

The new Final Cut Studio is due to ship sometime in the spring, which Raudonis took to mean no later than June 20. Apple already been confirmed for the Final Cut Pro User Group meeting on Tuesday with a "very special guest" replacing Avid, Blackmagic, and several other companies that were to have presented until the last-minute change of plans. iPad control surface

The iPad is the ideal candidate to function as a control surface for Color, Soundtrack and Motion. That would be super cool!

So Mark, was this your first visit to Apple's HQ in Cupertino? Hope you enjoyed it, 'cause it most probably was your last. :)
