Windows 8 Milestone 1 leaks out on the web

updated 08:45 am EDT, Wed April 13, 2011

Win 8 early Milestone build focuses under the hood

Screenshots of Windows 8 Milestone 1 have surfaced on the web. The very early build of the new OS, build 7850, does not hint at any departure from the current interface design seen in Windows 7. However, cosmetic tweaks are unlikely to appear at this early juncture, with changes to Windows 7 as it is reshaped into Windows 8 likely to be under the hood. For those who are adventurous, however, BetaArchive has posted a link to where the Milestone 1 build can be accessed.

Windows 8 Milestone 2 has been available for developers has been finished and the release of Milestone 3 is due around June. It is anticipated that Microsoft will have the first Windows 8 beta ready for the summer.

A final release date for Windows 8 has not been publicly set as yet, however Microsoft's OS release pattern over the past several years would put its release in the fall of 2012. While Milestone 1 is not giving much away in terms of appearance and the functionality of the OS, Microsoft have indicated that the OS will be much more tablet and touch optimized than Windows 7.
