Formal press release highlights discontent

HP's dispute with Oracle over the future of Intel's Itanium platform continues to smolder, as HP has highlighted discontent among its customer base. The company posted a press release quoting frustrated customers that are concerned that Oracle has decided to cease further development of Itanium software, which is currently used in HP's Integrity servers.

"Forcing customers into changing platforms impacts our business strategy and partnerships," said Stuller CTO Carol Skarlat. "We rely on both HP and Oracle as significant business partners in running our business. Having one partner dictate platform strategy is unthinkable. We urge Oracle to reconsider its decision.”

The press release includes a variety of similar quotes from various companies that have criticized oracle for its move away from Itanium. HP also gathered a series of videos as part of a series titled "Tell Oracle How You Feel About Dropping Itanium."

The conflict began when Oracle noted that it would stop future development for Itanium processors, which were said to be nearing the end of their life cycle. The company noted that other companies, including Microsoft and RedHat, will follow a similar path.

Intel and HP quickly denied Oracle's suggestion that Itanium is on its way out, despite Intel's apparent focus on making broader expansion to its Xeon series of server processors. The chip maker cited at least two new Itanium chips in the pipeline, while HP claims to have an Itanium roadmap that extends beyond a decade.

HP is currently calling on its customers to submit additional comments or contact Oracle and complain.
