S1080 among first tablets to ship dual-core Atom

Gigabyte has started taking orders for its S108 dual-core 1.66Ghz Atom-powered Windows 7 tablet in Taiwan. The device has a has a 10.1-inch LED capacitive multi-touch panel with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. It comes standard with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and utilizes Intel’s GMA 3150 integrated graphics, while it features one USB 3.0 port in its array to deliver high-speed connectivity.

In addition to the USB 3.0 port, the S1080 is also fitted with a USB 2.0 port, D-sub, RJ45, Mic-in, headphone-out, and SD card reader. Wireless connectivity options are also highly specified with 1Gbps LAN, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, and support for an optional 3.5G module. A 320GB hard drive is also standard fitment as is a relatively high-capacity 4000mAh battery.

It weighs in at a relatively hefty 895 grams, making it substantially heavier that an iPad, for example, which is around 613 grams. Battery life has not been specified, although traditionally, Windows 7 tablets with Atom chips have seldom achieved more than five hours of battery life. It is possible that the S1080 could exceed this yardstick as it features Intel’s latest generation Oak Trail Atom platform, which combined with its larger than average battery could help it break the 5 hour mark. Tablets running lightweight operating systems are typically achieving around the hour mark by comparison, but don't necessarily offer the same enterprise compatibility as the S1080 which runs Windows 7 Home Premium.

It is expected to ship to international markets in May and is currently retailing in its Taiwanese home market for the equivalent of $787. [via Computer World]
