Google asks Roku to take down gray YouTube channel

Roku has run into a dispute with Google over an unofficial but widely used YouTube channel on its media hubs. Google has sent a takedown notice to Roku that in turn led to a block on the channel for any new subscriber. Roku told Zatz Not Funny it was "in the midst of negotiations" but didn't say what the core issue was or whether the channel was likely to stay.

More details were expected next week.

The channel, made by The Nowhereman, may have run into simple trademark issues. Its design makes it appear more like an official app, including the YouTube name and logos, and has few if any real clues that it was run by an outsider. Roku even liked the implementation enough to hire him as a staffer and gave the channel indirect approval as a result.

Most other devices in the Roku's category, from the Apple TV to the Boxee Box, often have either explicit approval from Google or a browser that can load YouTube in its regular web format.
