PlayStation Network goes down for unknown reason [U]

PlayStation Network out for a whole night

(Updated with long repair timeframe) Sony's PlayStation Network has gone down since last night, with little information on its fault. Sony has acknowledged the issue but made no attempt to explain why the problem occurred. Users can't log into the network and when a fix is forthcoming hasn't been communicated either, indicating Sony has yet to find it.

Sony Europe is slightly more forthcoming, saying the system is down for maintenance over Twitter. The error code returned by the PS3, 80710A06, simply means there is an "issue with the system," according to Sony's support site.

This isn't likely to be the work of supporters of George Hotz, who recently made an agreement with Sony and vowed not to experiment with the company's products again. The pseudo-activist group Anonymous disrupted both PSN and some Sony websites in brute force attacks during the run up to a trial date for what they believed was both an unfair software policy and privacy intrusions into the lives of those who had never actually used a PS3 jailbreak.

Update: Sony has now said the service might not be back for a full one to two days.
