Olympus still pushing Four Thirds format strongly

Ex-Olympus chief Akira Watanabe has revealed that Olympus will continue deliver new E-series DSLRs in the single and double-digit lines. The triple digit E-series models have been replaced by the PEN series. The mid-range Four Thirds camera series had been rumored to be discontinued, although when the new models will arrive was not specified.

Other matters of interest arising from the interview include Olympus' plans for camera Four Thirds camera lenses. Watanabe also revealed that Olympus is aware of customer requests for larger aperture Four Thirds lenses and these are in the pipeline.

Watanable was interviewed by a Chinese publication during the China Photographic and Electrical Imaging exhibition currently taking place where Olympus will be heavily promoting the Four Thirds format for the Chinese market. Market penetration of Four Thirds cameras is at around 10 percent, and Olympus believes there is significant room for expanding this.
