50 RED EPIC-M cameras for Avatar 2?

The chief of RED Jim Jannard has revealed that Academy Award winning director James Cameron has ordered 50 RED EPIC-M cameras. The cameras are a modular design and can be used to shoot in 3D, as two EPIC-Ms can be placed on the same mount and linked. This would deliver two 5k-resolution images at once.

The RED EPIC-M cameras retail for $58,000 each putting Cameron's order close to $3 million. This would surpass the order for 30 EPIC-Ms that Peter Jackson purchased late last year for The Hobbit. It is thought that Cameron may have placed the order for the sequel to Avatar, Avatar 2 that is due to hit cinemas in 2014.

The RED EPIC-M 5k-resolution is delivered courtesy of a 5k Mysterium-X sensor. It incorporates a bomb electronic viewfinder, a five-inch touchscreen, an SSD module, a remote and four 128GB SSD cards. The device can be used wire free and delivers a peak frame rate of 120FPS, even at its highest resolution settings.

    Avatar 2?

I watched Aliens (Alien's sequel) directed by Cameron and it reminded me why I disliked Avatar so much. His heavy borrowing from his previous movies made Avatar just to painful and predictable to watch. If you loved Avatar I suggest you check out Aliens and you will see identical 2 dimension characters, pretty ironic for a movie that set a new technical and artistic standard in regards to 3D.

    Oh RED

RED has been lagging behind and late on delivering updated cameras. While certainly a great camera, they haven't lived up to what many film producers had hoped for - especially indie film makers. From what I have read, they have run in to some technical issues which has held them back. I hope this revenue helps move them forward. And don't get me wrong, while disappointed they haven't "lived up to the hype" - it was/is hype and I would still kill for a RED!

    Re: Avatar 2

Never saw it. All that I gleaned about the movie was "Incredible special effects". The plot sounded so stupid, bland, and preachy I couldn't imagine the effects making up for the stupidity it was bound to be.

But then most of what he does is more about his ego and 'big budget' and less about story.

Heck, alien was good BECAUSE they couldn't get the stupid alien to work correctly so they ended up keeping it sight unseen most of the time. Aliens was just silly in comparison (gee, who would've guessed she'd save the little girl).

    Publicity?

Why did Jannard make this announcement? Uh.. could it be because he desperately wants to sell the company to someone or anyone like he did with Oakley? Jannard is a brilliant marketeer, unfortunately when it comes to delivering on his promises, not so much. His "irritant" business approach that involves challenging incumbent businesses until they "buy him out" hasn't worked with RED because he totally misread the movie business. He wasn't the first and he won't be the last. On one side, he has now been undercut by movie-capable SLR's and on the other by the self-same incumbents, particularly Sony with the F3 and ARRI with the Alexa. Hey Jim, buh-bye!
