Next-gen MacBook Pro to use new case design?

updated 03:40 pm EDT, Mon April 25, 2011

Overhaul likely many months away

The next-generation MacBook Pro will use a substantially different case design, according to "reliable confirmation" received by MacRumors. Externally the notebook has remained mostly unchanged since 2008, when the first aluminum unibody models were released. The MR source does not, however, suggest in what way the Pro might be redesigned.

It's speculated that a new Pro could take after the MacBook Air. The latter machine is extremely lightweight, and relies on a "teardrop" shape to minimize its size. A new Pro would likely remain bigger though, as it would have to support a larger number of ports than the Air, as well as more advanced processors.

A redesign will also probably have to wait several months, unlike the iMac or the Mac Pro. The computer was just updated in February, and components have not advanced far enough to do much more than a cosmetic change. The next opportunity may come when Intel's Ivy Bridge platform ships by early 2012.

    It's perfect as is

Aside from maybe changing the bezel to silver (which I wouldn't like) or rounding off the edges of the dip to pull the screen up, I can't see much reason for change unless they want to start taking out the optical drives.

    I guess

Carbon Fiber Composite case, no hard drive (SSD only for low weight & power), touchscreen - yes, since I automatically tend to want to touch it after learning the iPad. :-)

    Much higher resolution display.

    Two Tone

Get rid of the tacky two tone design motif that Apple has been pursuing for a while now, making current MacBooks look more like PCs than earlier ones. Getting rid of the excessively reflective and unnecessarily space consuming glossy pane of glass (so it would have a bezel again) would be a good idea too.

I guess what I'm looking for would be an upsized MacBook Air, but in a consistent colour scheme. Perhaps it's time for Apple to go all-black, especially if they're moving to carbon fibre.

    file down the corner

I can't stand the sharp corner on the edge of bottom case on the current gen machines. I've got a 17" from a few years back before they switched to the unibody construction, and it has a little plastic bumper around the case. Not sharp, and very pleasant to have. I assume it's plastic, at least.

Not that I'm advocating a return to the plastic wrapper or anything. But round off the existing one a little bit. It has actually factored quite strongly into my not wanting to upgrade just yet.
