RealNetworks' Rinse cleans up iTunes libraries [U]

Program adds album art, fixes song info tags


[Updated: Program officially announced] A new program called Rinse, developed by RealNetworks, claims to be able to automatically correct song titles, add album art, and remove duplicate tracks from an iTunes library. Versions of the program are available for both Mac OS and Windows XP and Vista. The company claims the program works even with misspelled or incomplete information, providing that at least one word of the artist and song names is spelled correctly.

Rinse uses a database of song details. It gives the user the option to correct tracks either one at a time, which allows editing, or automatically in batches.The program also standardizes genre names and can search for and eliminate duplicate tracks.

RealNetworks has now officially announced Rinse with a product website, as well as a Twitter account and Facebook page for the program.

Rinse is the second effort in recent months by RealNetworks to position itself as a media management service. At CES 2011, RealNetworks previewed Unifi, a cloud-based media library system that is currently in public beta testing. [via Geekwire]

    Song Genie

    So this is going to directly compete with Song Genie then?

    Looks like Song Genie may still be a better choice for identifying songs as it can identify the songs just by "listening" to them. I can throw it a song with no info and it will find the correct album info.

    No iTunes

    Is there something like this that doesn't require iTunes integration? I'd rather perform the scan against a CIFS share.

    I tried Picard a few years ago... still recovering from the mess that it left behind. I don't need it to "listen" to the music, just fix tags/art/genre.

    Interesting...

    ...that RealNetworks has been reduced to making utilities for other people's media player software now.

    Oh well, as long as they don't cram RealPlayer down our throats anymore, I'm good!

    Nice idea (but)

    Nice idea, but what would be great is if this could also normalize audio levels across all tracks. MP3gain and AACgain for the Mac don't really seem to function properly anymore, and while MP3gain for Windows can do what needs to be done, AACgain isn't in the same league (and of course not everyone has bootcamp or a windows VM). If that function were added this would be a very interesting app. (Also, how come there is an option for removing duplicates in which those "duplicates" have differing lengths? Something's a bit wrong with that... Makes me extremely nervous that the people responsible for putting this together don't appear to understand what a "duplicate" is...)

    So, your lament isn't that the app is good or bad, it's that you want an app that does something completely different?

    Have you tried iVolume?

    Tidysongs

    RealNetworks' Rinse cleans up iTunes libraries??? I'm guessing that RealNetworks' owns or has purchased, the right to use Tidysongs. Tidysongs can be found on the Mac App store. It appears to me the true owner of this application might be Cloudbrain, LLC. All rights reserved. Copyright 2009. The interface other than a logo change and color scheme as identical.

    use with care

    I have quite a few "duplicates" with slightly different lengths, depending on what did the ripping. Some have had lead-ins or trail-offs trimmed more aggressively than others.
    Still, I would not trust it without careful monitoring, even if it does a better job than the apps that only use the tag information and track length. In consolidating our libraries we are finding many identical tracks with wildly differing tag info - for instance, I'm pretty sure The Moody Blues never actually released a cover of a Whiter Shade of Pale...
    Even iTunes' Find Album Artwork feature frequently slaps a completely wrong cover on things (our "favorite" was suddenly finding our 3-CD Cowboy Bebop soundtrack collection box set displaying the cover of The Bay City Rollers first album [which I'm not sure was even in the iTunes store at that time]. Last time we used THAT feature...) so I hope this does a better job at that too.

    how does this compare with TuneUp?

    There seem to be a few of these utilities. I already have TuneUp (which seems to work okay but is slow)

    New My Ars*

    When it was called TidyTunes they tried to fix some of the bugs now and then. It was rather riddled with them and crashed quite a bit. However, now it's a 'new' product they're not recognising the old customers - who can go swing or splash out again. If that's the way you like to be treated then splash out - for me - it's one of those companies you've just got let wither without your money. Good luck to them!
