HTC Q1 2011 sees it ship 9.7m phones, plan for 11m
HTC on Friday reported one of its best quarters ever and set relatively high expectations. The company's profit almost tripled from year-to-year to reach the equivalent of $510 million. Phone shipments themselves were a record high at 9.7 million on the back of its continued strong Android lineup.
The company also had aggressive expectations for the spring. Expectations were that it would ship 11 million devices led by its two dual-core smartphones, the Evo 3D and Sensation, as well as its first modern tablets, the Evo View 4G and Flyer. Many of the sales will be led by a recently overhauled mainstream smartphone mix that includes phones like the Incredible S.
HTC is one of the fastest growing phone builders in the world and has now passed Motorola, whose 9.3 million phones weren't enough to keep it ahead. It still has roughly half as many smartphone sales as Apple but has largely kept pace.
