Samsung AMOLED tablet not coming this year
Samsung while discussing its early 2011 results dampened hopes for an AMOLED-equipped Galaxy Tab this year. In spite of a seven-inch prototype screen geared to the tablet design, a managing director said there were no plans for AMOLED slates in the year. The executive gave no immediate reasons why or whether that meant a 2012 device.
AMOLED has been a staple of Samsung's phone line and the centerpiece feature for phones like the Galaxy S II, but its price has made it too expensive for larger screens. Samsung also won't have full-scale production of the organic screens for the next few months and has usually had to switch to LCD for versions of phones like the Nexus S in countries where the screen choice wouldn't have as much of an impact.
The technique, especially when it uses Super AMOLED or Super AMOLED Plus, has been touted for its rich colors, deep blacks, and its ghosting-free pixel response. [via Samsung Hub]
