Sony says PSN passwords had been put through crypto hash

PSN passwords were crypto hashed, not encrypted

Sony has once again commented on the longest PlayStation Network outage to date, assuring users their passwords were protected, if not encrypted. The method used instead was called a cryptographic hash function and Sony has provided a link to help PSN users understand the difference. The passwords were not simply offered up in clear text form in Sony's database, the company said.

Sony also repeated its warning that users be vigilant and not provide any personal information to parties purporting to be Sony. The company's policy would never let it request personal data.

The company remained apologetic for the security breach and maintained that users will be kept informed on any new developments. Sony has promised free incentives for gamers after PSN comes back and has anticipated online gaming coming back as soon as this Tuesday.
