Sony's SOE joins in security-related shutdowns
Sony's hacked online server fiasco was compounded on Monday after Sony Online Entertainment posted a notice that its servers had been taken down as well. As part of the hunt for details into the PlayStation Network breach, SOE said it had found a problem that "warrants enough concern" to take down its servers as well. An update was coming later on Monday, it said.
No estimated timeframe was given for service going back up. PSN was due to get limited service back sometime on Tuesday but might not be accompanied by SOE.
The move has taken down all of Sony's massively multiplayer online role-playing games, such as the original EverQuest. All of SOE's server-dependent Facebook games have also been shut down. Its outage hasn't been fully assessed but is one of the biggest in history, with 77 million PSN users and now millions of SOE subscribers going without service.
