Seagate shows first 3TB, 1TB per platter drive

Seagate on Tuesday brought out a world-first hard drive for storage density. The 3.5-inch drive breaks the 1TB per platter barrier and will first be available in the company's GoFlex Desk external drives. The drive has an areal density of 625 gigabits (78.13GB) per square inch, which is the highest in the industry.

The company will also use the drive for its Barracuda XT desktop line that's due to ship mid-year. Versions of the drive in 2TB, 1.5TB and 1TB capacities are already on shelves. The external GoFlex Desk drive comes with an NTFS driver for simultaneous Mac and Windows compatibility without having to reformat.

Neither pricing nor concrete release dates are yet known for drives based on the new storage.

    What does this mean?

Is there an advantage for the end user? Does this density mean that the drive transfers data faster than other 3TB hard drives?

    5TB Here we come!

We should start seeing some larger capacities then too, I'm hoping for 5TB drives by fall?!
