New launch date to be announced

Sprint has reportedly delayed its PlayBook launch, according to an internal document that was allegedly circulated to dealers. The carrier and RIM initially promised an April 19 launch date for the CDMA variant, however the schedule was later pushed back to May 8. The latest information does not provide any estimate for the actual release.

The document, which was posted on BriefMobile, suggests the launch date "will be communicated as soon as it is available." Employees are advised to retain any marketing materials until the devices arrive in stores.

The delay appears to be related to the 3G variant that was supposed to arrive in the spring, rather than the WiMAX-equipped 4G version that is expected to launch later in the summer. Specific reasons for the delays remain unclear.
