New rumor narrows down Nikon mirrorless details

Nikon's long rumored mirrorless interchangeable lens camera showed the first signs of solidifying with a rumor Thursday. A historically reliable source claimed the camera would have an unusually high 2.6X crop factor. The Nikon Rumors tip would have the sensor smaller even than Micro Four Thirds, although still much larger than usual point-and-shoot sensors.

Like its competitors, the lens choice for the new camera would be kept simple. A pancake lens would be in place to keep the camera very compact and provide a bright, wide-angle lens for portraits and close-ups. Two zooms would also be in the range, but what they would be wasn't mentioned; most companies so far have a standard 3X zoom equivalent and a long standard zoom.

Very little else has emerged of the camera. Design patents have supported its existence, and Nikon's own executives have suggested something was on the way. Suspected launch windows in March and April have come and gone, however.

More tangible details could still point to the camera being complete enough that Nikon has hashed out more details.
