Advance notice may have thwarted further Sony hack

Early warning could have prevented third PSN hack

A Thursday report from CNET about a planned third attack against Sony's PSN servers may have put a stop to it, the same source let it be known on Monday. During a new IRC channel the hacking group uses to communicate, a member wrote that he believes Sony saw the article since the last server that was freely accessible is now offline and being secured. "There goes our window," read the comment.

The attack was supposed to be retaliation against Sony for its handling of the nearly three-week long PlayStation Network outage. The group planned to post any user information they found on public sites. The plans were brought to CNET's attention by an observer of the IRC channel used by the hackers.

For the large attack that affected more than 100 million Sony PSN users from across the world, Sony has promised to compensate customers with free ID theft monitoring and free content and 30 days of free access to the premium, subscription-based PSN network called PlayStation Plus in North America.
