Expands reach of nominally Apple-centric standard
Developer doubleTwist has joined companies providing AirPlay support for Android devices. The outfit's Android app has been updated to v1.4.1, and can now use AirPlay to stream music, photos and video to an Apple TV. Music and video can be funneled to DLNA-ready hardware, and music alone can be pushed to Sonos speakers via early beta support.
The feature is notable in that AirPlay output is normally reserved for iOS devices, as well as compatible desktop software such as iTunes. Its use through the doubleTwist Player app requires being on the same Wi-Fi network as a target device, and paying $5 for the AirSync add-on, which also allows wireless sync with iTunes. doubleTwist is not the first company to enable AirPlay for Android; PacketVideo's Twonky accomplishes the same basic feat without an extra fee.
