Google looking to hire head of mobile payments

Google has began actively searching for a new marketing head who would oversee the mobile wallet and offers division for the Android mobile operating system. The title this person would wear is the EMEA head of commerce marketing. He'd also need to hire two commerce product marketing managers to expand the division, TheNextWeb learned.

The mobile wallet function would work with Android 2.3's native NFC (Near Field Communications) support for electronic payments. It remains to be seen whether Google will partner with a bank or payment provider like Visa or Mastercard in its efforts. It has the option to become an independent financial services provider but would need to register for an e-money license.

The company is entering a new industry that is also being explored by competitors, including Microsoft, RIM and Nokia.
