YouTube adds 3K movies and hints major service

YouTube hinted at big plans for its movie service on Monday in a post talking about expanded plans. It was adding 3,000 new titles to its currently indie-focused rentals. The extended capacity would also bring reviews and extra footage.

More would be coming along in a post later in the day, the company said.

The mentions didn't yet amount to the full commercial service Google has repeatedly been hinting but did partly corroborate stories of an imminent rollout. Recent buyouts of companies like fflick either have or could soon be contributing to the project.

YouTube's mention came just a day before the Google I/O conference in San Francisco and would point to Google either clear news before the event or else tie it into plans for the show. Android devices have so far lacked a cohesive, platform-wide movie service and might end up relying on YouTube to supply professional video. Other platforms are also likely to get access to the service, though not necessarily through native apps.
