Android to get Open Accessory APIs, accessory dev kit

updated 01:50 pm EDT, Tue May 10, 2011

ADK used for "open accessories"

Google has previewed several Android technologies aimed at the accessory market, including 'Open Accessory' APIs and a development kit for hardware. The Open Accessory APIs aim to expand the range of accessories that will work with Android devices, while also ensuring that any accessories will work with "all devices" in the future.

Alongside the new APIs, the platform will be paired with an ADK development kit for experimenting with hardware accessories. The system takes advantage of open-source Arduino hardware for controlling device interactions via USB.

The company demonstrated both technologies at its I/O developer conference. The Open Accessory APIs enabled an Android handset to be paired with an exercise bike, providing input control for a game. The ADK system was connected to servos on a labyrinth board, with tilt controlled by a Motorola Xoom tablet.

The Open Accessory APIs will be available immediately, however a launch date for the ADK hardware remains unclear.
