HTC Sensation to carry locked bootloader

HTC Sensation system dump shows signed ROM

HTC's upcoming Sensation smartphone will continue the company's tradition of having a locked bootloader, AndroidPolice found. This means the Android phone won't easily support custom ROMs or recovery software, if at all. This is a disappointment to the developer/hacker community, as the Sensation will be one of the most powerful handsets with both a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor and HSPA+ 3G.

In comparison, The Samsung Galaxy S II is easy to modify as its bootloader isn't locked. The phone won't reject firmware that doesn't have an authentic signature.

The revelation regarding the Sensation comes from a system dump that can be downloaded in its entirety.

Google has drawn increasing flak for a policy letting companies lock bootloaders. It often insists Android is open, but the absence of locked hardware has left many end users with little choice but to use the software the carrier and phone maker decided to include.
