TiVo slashes Premiere DVR prices down

TiVo today chose to permanently alter its Premiere DVR pricing to draw in some viewers. Starting May 19, the company will now permanently sell the core Premiere for $100 on a year-long contract for those willing to pay $20 per month and the Premiere XL plus Premium Remote bundle for $300 on the same rates. Paying $500 now gets a Product Lifetime deal that gives service for free for the life of the hardware, up $100 from before.

The price changes are lower for subscribers on more expensive rates but higher for those going with lifetime service. Lifetime service is still less expensive, but the lower device prices that had previously been sale-only may attract those who had been willing to opt for a contract in return for a lower price. Lifetime is up $100 but the total cost is down $100.

Previously Lifetime TiVos were $299 + $399 for the first one. Now the same TiVos are $99 + $499 for a savings of $100. If you had a lifetime TiVo already, you pay the same price you did before since $299 + $299 is no different than $99 + $499.
